These two pictures are quite nice. The only suggestion that I may offer is to de-center the birds.

The rule of thirds may apply to this photo, but it's nice as is. Notice that the water line is one third of the way up - nicely done.

hmmm, interesting. So by de-centering the bird, you would move it off to the left leaving room on the right for the bird to walk into and yet still keep the water at one third of the way up?

I see this in my mind. I'm going out on a limb here and saying that it looks like an interesting pic, or am I just out of my mind? :-)

Think tic-tac-toe board and you'll see the rule-of-thirds -- put the main subject at one of the intersection points and the horizon line on one of the horizontal lines. If you're shooting people you try to get their eyes on the top horizontal line.

If the subject is looking or moving in a specific direction you definitely want to give them room in the frame to move the way they are looking -- otherwise it looks like they're going to fall off the map, which is scary.
